Hello there, my name is Pamela White RN BSN. You can call me nurse Pam and I can’t wait to get to know you. Here’s a little back story so you can get to know a little about myself in a nutshell...
As a child growing up in a small town of West Texas in the 1980’s and 1990’s there wasn’t much to do in the way of entertainment. My 3 other siblings were much older than me so I spent a lot of time finding ways to entertain myself. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the outdoor world around me, you could call me a tom boy, climber of trees, little Nancy Drew, maker of mud pies, and an avid rock collector. In my outdoor explorations around my neighborhood is where I would find all kinds of interesting things. Mostly because I come from a generation that when mom or dad told you to go out and play, you better do so and be back home before the street lights came on. So, what did I do most of the time? I ended up rescuing animals, insects, lizards and did my best at attempting to nurse them back to health. My mother was an RN, so I attribute many of my nurturing skills, cooking talents, home making, morals, work ethic, and expertise to her. Whether it was a bird with a broken wing, orphaned wildlife, a lost dog or cat, or animals that were dumped I would bring home, lord knows my mother had the patience of an angel. All in all, we had helped countless animals over the years of my childhood and some of which I would sneak into the shed to help rehabilitate sometimes with my dad’s help. LOL! Unfortunately, those that couldn’t be helped just broke my heart, but I found in that pain a calling to keep helping whatever I could no matter what. Because when I see something or someone get better and thrive because of the help that I gave, I feel extremely rewarded to know that I had a part in it.
Fast forward several years, I relocated to the Dallas area in 2001 at 18 years old struggle bussing/surviving/learning about life. I wanted to get out of the small town and get a taste of what a big city had to offer. I started working several retail jobs, working 2 retail jobs on one occasion for a good number of years, putting in applications everywhere to get a position working with animals. Why did I not go straight to college you ask? Well I wanted to explore the “real life” for awhile. Goodness, did I learn some things and I do not regret my decision to wait for college. I say that without regret because I learned so much more about myself, many people I had come in contact with, and the world around me which has prepared me for the present. I knew deep down that I wanted to dip my toe into both pools if you will of helping animals and people. That was my dream and by God I was going to somehow make the dream come true no matter how long it took. In 2006, I was given that chance to work the front desk of one of the most reputable animal clinics in the Dallas area. Then my passion then grew into a full-fledged career of 8 years working for Summertree Animal & Bird Clinic in the veterinary field as a veterinary technician. I was known as the “Bird Whisperer” by clients and my coworkers somehow the most aggressive and anxious birds could easily calm in my presence as well as other animals that were extremely anxious and or deemed aggressive. You could call me fearless, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do to help an animal in need. In the veterinary world, vet techs are jugglers of many trades and my hats off to all of them because it truly takes a village of the most compassionate and loving individuals to perform all the duties expected of them. My passion for helping animals then grew into wanting to go into the nursing field as I had the best role model of a nurse, my mother Darlene.
Fast forward to 2011, my family suffered many traumas in a short amount of time. My paternal grandmother passed in January 2011, my eldest niece had a major car accident resulting in traumatic brain injury in Feb 2011, and my father passed from complications related to multiple myeloma in July of 2011. Our family spent so much time going from hospital to hospital seeing my dad and my eldest niece. We had some good memories, but most of them were devastating. Then in 2012 almost a year after my father passed my mother passed in August 2012. She passed from multiple organ failure which was a result of a blood infection she acquired from a routine surgery to repair a hernia. So in turn that infection wasn’t treated properly and as a result that infection damaged her heart valve in which she had to have emergency heart surgery. So, through all of those experiences I noticed there was a huge need for nurses. I wanted to provide care of all sorts of people who may be going through similar situations. So those experiences motivated me into pursuing a career in nursing even more. I know that God called me to push through all that devastation and turn it into a good and purposeful passion. I am empathetic to your needs if you have gone through something similar because self-care and mental health is vital to healing the body.
Another fast forward, I continued to work through many twists and turns of life, knocking out college courses one by one working towards my RN goal. After much hard work and dedication, I got accepted into the Brookhaven College Nursing Program in Farmers Branch Texas. I graduated with honors with my Associates of Nursing in December 2017. I worked in work study program as a tutor for Anatomy and Physiology lab during my nursing program. All the clinical experience I received in my nursing program was so fulfilling and helped me in my career as a nurse. Not long after my graduation, I immediately began working in pediatric home health working for Angels of Care. Then changes in life happened and I ended up relocating back to West Texas in 2018. In October of 2018, I was given a wonderful opportunity and nursing residency at Midland Memorial (Hospital where both my parents had been patients and passed) while concurrently working on my Bachelor’s Degree at Texas Tech ElPaso. I eventually received my Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University of El Paso, graduating Summa Cum Laude with honors in May 2019. I worked in acute care PCU and ICU at Midland Memorial Hospital from 2018 until 2020 working the overnight shift while driving an hour both ways from Coahoma Texas. That experience was rewarding yet took some major resiliency. I praise God for giving me the patience and persistence cause that was exhausting despite all the help I was affording to my patients. Covid hit in fall 2019 before we even knew what it was, at the hospital we kept having patient’s being brought in with a diagnosis of unspecified pneumonia and flu-like complications cases that were resulting in so many deaths left and right. But I knew is wasn’t just the flu and we needed to figure out what it was before more people died. That whole experience was hard to put into words, it was a very difficult time. As you the reader are very well aware, Covid is and will remain a very traumatizing event not only in the present, but in history. I’m grateful that I have seen just about every disease process, illness, trauma, and the end-of-life process, having those experiences, good and bad blessed me with so much knowledge and I will forever be grateful for my time working at Midland Memorial Hospital.
In May of 2020, I began working for Big Spring State Hospital(BSSH) as a psychiatric nurse and just so happens that’s where my mother worked for 23 years as a psych nurse, and my older brother is also a psych nurse working there currently. God doesn’t bring people together by accident and BSSH is exactly where I was meant to be to meet my business partner nurse Lauren. We found many similarities in the way we not only practice as nurses, we both have a deep love for animals and animal welfare. We found a profound appreciation for utilizing more holistic and natural ways for our own journey’s. We want to offer nursing guidance and coach people along their wellness journeys too. We decided we don’t want to be limited to the bedside in Texas where we live, we want to help people all over the United States/wherever our multi-state compact license allows. I having worked in the veterinary field for many years, I also wanted to bring animals back into my focus as well and nurse Lauren encouraged me to use my veterinary experience/knowledge which allows me to offer dual modalities. All in all we decided we would do whatever it takes to help make our dreams into a reality. As of October 2nd 2023, Nurse to Nurse Health and Wellness PLLC was launched.
I know that I have reached a very full circle of nursing expertise and as health care is ever changing will continue to stay up to date and research the best ways to ensure you are receiving the care you deserve. All in all, after so much nursing expertise in different fields, experience in dealing with the unsavory administration, political agendas, and agencies telling me and my fellow nurse colleagues how to nurse and not trusting nursing judgement. Something just needed to give and I prayed about what the next chapter holds for me. I believe in acute medicine and the need to save lives in the event of emergencies, but the chronic illnesses that lead to a lot of those acute situations leading people to being hospitalized could potentially be avoided nutritionally/naturally by choosing to change their lifestyles for the better.
My newest passion is through my own self-care and wellness journey while working in my nursing career because it’s stressful in nursing and to avoid my own health decline I had to make changes so that I could be a better caregiver to my patient’s. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”. So needless to say I had to find more natural approaches to my health care and wellness to fill my cup. I want to help others in their health and wellness journeys to do the same. At this time, God has moved me to turn to the next chapter of my life in a new direction. Due to all the expertise and knowledge I have gained over the years I get to live out my dream. This is where I thank you for allowing me to be able to live my dream of being able to dip my toe into both pools of nursing and animal care. Thank you for helping keep a little flame burning that was sparked by a red-headed, spunky, and full of life little girl from West Texas who always had a burning passion to help others.
My hope now and in the future is to leave a legacy for continued changes in ways of holistic and alternative ways nurses can help combat the chronic conditions they and so many people and animals face today. Sometimes it just takes a small change to make a huge impact on the lives of others and for the rest of their lives. I want my compassionate care to have meant something long after I’m gone (years and years far down the road from now ofcourse) and to transcend on into the lives of so many who deserve to be healthy and feel their best. If you are ready to live your best life, I’m here to guide you and I’m thrilled to get to meet you and maybe even your pets.
Until then,
Many blessings be with you and yours,
Pamela White RN, BSN
